PHOBIAS

In our contemporary world, lots of people have some phobias. Common phobias include fear of water, lightening, animals, insects, heights and closed-in places such elevators that generally lead to an avoidance of common everyday places, objects, or situations. It is unrealistic fear of something, a fear that you know is not rational.'’(Phobias, P.1) Phobia is a fear of one’s own impulses and could be the fear of having a panic attack and losing control. There aren’t three different categories of phobias, these have some causes and fortunately, there are some treatments. In fact, they are not real; they are a figment of a person’s imagination.

Phobias are classified into three types-simple phobias, social phobias and agoraphobia. People who have some simple phobias experience fear of a certain object, place of situation such as heights, tunnels, flying, on thunderstorms. People with social phobia avoid public situations, like a party, because they are afraid of doing something to embarrass them. Finally, the last kind of a complex phenomenon. They are afraid of strange places such as open spaces, or tunnels.

There are some causes of phobias such as bad childhood experiences, genetically reasons and insufficient functioning of the part of brain called ‘’amygdale'’ (Facts about social phobia, P.1) For instance, if a child fell down from the wall, he could have height phobia or a child whose father has some kind of phobias, may have the some phobias because of his genes.

Fortunately, the majority of phobias are treatable. For instance, there are lots of techniques used to treat phobias such as medication, behavioral strategies, psychological assessments, cognitive strategy biofeedback training, Nevro feedback, Virtual Reality Therapy and Career assessment and counseling (coping with the Fear of Fear)

Social phobia is a kind of phobia which can be defined as social anxiety. By observing the society, we can see every kind or type of people as well as people who have obvious specialties like having intense, persistent, strong and perminent ideas of being watched and judged by others. They also think that their own actions are embarrassing so they can’t act well in the society or eat and drink or speak in front of other people. Physical symptoms of social phobia include blushing, sweating, trembling, difficulty in talking, nausea, stomach discomfort and other visible symptoms.(Facts about Social Phobia,P.1)

About 3,7% of the U.S. population ages between 28 and 54,approximately 5.3 million Americans, has social phobia.(Facts about Social Phobia,P.1)'’Social phobia occurs in women twice as often as rarely develops after age 25′’(Facts about Social Phobia,P.1)

There are different causes of social phobia. One of them is childhood experiences.'’Sensitivity to disaproval may be physiologically or hormonally based.Other researchers are investigating the environmental influence on the development of social phobia.'’(Fact about Social Phobia)

There are some treatments available for social phobia such as medications well as drugs, specific form of short term psychotherapy called cognitive-behavioral therapy where a person is exposed to certain social situations which he avoids is also effective.

In conclusion, phobias have some negative effects on the people in the society. However, this problem is treatable and people can deal with this problem. In my opinion, phobias are a figment of a person’s imagination. So, people who have some phobias should go to a psychotherapist.
